How to Properly Dust Your Home

By Acme Homes 5-13-2022

Dust is a blanket term for multiple things, mainly, pet dander, dead skin cells, pollen and lint. All these things combined create that white film on the surfaces in our homes that we are all familiar with. Regularly dusting your home will keep allergens at bay and help your home to have a pristine appearance. Here’s how to properly dust your home.

Change Your HVAC Filter

Have you changed your HVAC filter lately? If not, it is time to do so. Generally speaking, you should change this filter every 3-6 months depending on what type of filter you have installed. If you do not change your filter regularly, dust will just get redistributed into your home through your registers.

Launder Your Linens

Before you get started actually dusting, now is a great time to remove curtains and pillowcases and wash them. The textiles in rooms often get forgotten but giving them a quick wash will get rid of any of the dirt and dust they've been harboring. It will also make sure that the dusting you do later does not fall into your linens.

Start From the Top

The best way to dust is from top to bottom. This way you do not make extra work for yourself. So, start with your ceiling fans and light fixtures. Grab a ladder and a microfiber cloth to complete this job. Or you can buy an extendable dusting pole to get the job done safer.

Don’t Forget the Walls

Next, dust your walls and any pictures or decorations on them. This includes mirrors, art, and picture frames. A damp cloth works best for this portion of your dusting routine. Do not forget to wipe down the window and door frames while you are at it.

Furniture and Knick Knacks

After you’ve done the walls, it is time to move on to furniture, knick knacks, and electronics. Move any books or tchotchkes from furniture. Give them a dusting as you move them. Use a microfiber cloth to dust the entire surface of each piece of furniture. For electronics and hard to reach spaces, a can of compressed air can help clear dust and debris away.

Finish with Floors

Now that all the fallen dust has collected onto your floors, it is time to vacuum. Aim to get under as much furniture as you can. If some furniture is too heavy to move, you can use your vacuum’s hose along with a long attachment to get to these areas.

And there you have it! A step-by-step guide for how to properly dust your home. If you dust your home in this order, you can streamline this chore and complete it quickly.
