Avoid These Mistakes When Doing Laundry

By Acme Homes 7-24-2023

At Acme Homes, we want to create spaces that make life easier and more enjoyable for you. Including functional laundry rooms. Some people love doing laundry, while others… not so much. If you have a “laundry chair”, you probably fall into the latter camp. Regardless of how you feel about it, laundry is a necessary chore, and we want to share some ways that you could be doing it more successfully and efficiently. Here are some common mistakes people make when doing their laundry so that you can avoid making them too.

Overloading the Washing Machine

Putting too many clothes in the washing machine can result in inadequate cleaning and rinsing. It also puts additional strain on the machine, potentially leading to damage or malfunction. So, while it is tempting to get as much laundry done in one go, it is best for the health of your clothes and your washing machine itself if you follow the manufacturer’s recommendation for load size. For most modern washing machines this is about ¾ full.

Using Too Much Detergent

Using more detergent than necessary doesn't make your clothes cleaner. In fact, it can leave behind residue and make rinsing more difficult. Follow the recommended dosage on the detergent packaging or adjust it based on the load size and level of dirtiness. Many detergents today are concentrated, and you need much less product than you may be used to with traditional detergents as well.

Neglecting to Sort Laundry

Sorting your laundry based on color, fabric type, and washing instructions is crucial to prevent color bleeding, damage, and shrinkage. Take the time to separate whites, darks, and delicates to ensure optimal results.

Not Checking Pockets

Forgetting to check pockets before washing can lead to issues like staining, lint accumulation, or damage to both the clothes and the washing machine. Always empty pockets and check for items like tissues, coins, or other small objects.

Ignoring Garment Care Labels

Garment care labels provide valuable information about how to properly wash and dry clothes. Ignoring these instructions can result in fabric damage, shrinking, or color fading. Take a moment to read and follow the care labels on each item.

Using High Heat on Delicate Fabrics

Delicate fabrics such as silk, lace, or wool require special care. Using high heat during washing or drying can damage these fabrics. Opt for gentle cycles and lower heat settings to preserve the quality and longevity of delicate garments.

Neglecting to Clean the Washing Machine

Regularly cleaning your washing machine helps prevent odors, mold, and bacteria buildup. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions to perform routine maintenance, such as running an empty cycle with vinegar or specialized washing machine cleaners. Also be sure not to neglect regularly emptying the washing machine’s filter. Yes, it has a filter!

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can improve the longevity, appearance, and cleanliness of your clothes while keeping your washing machine in good condition.
