Household Items that are Surprisingly Dirty

By Acme Homes 12-10-2021

No doubt, you have a regular cleaning routine. Which is great! Having a regular cleaning routine ensures that maintaining your home never gets too overwhelming. Even still, there are some things around your home that you just may not think to clean. Or at least it does not cross your mind to clean them regularly. Some of these forgotten household items can be surprisingly dirty, however. That is why your friends at Acme Homes want to share some of these forgotten items with you, so that you can give them the proper attention.

Toothbrush Holder

You know that cup that you store your toothbrushes in? The one at the sink? Well, studies have found traces of fecal matter on these surfaces. Which makes sense when you think about it, but that does not make that fact any less horrifying. The best way to keep your toothbrushes and toothbrush holders clean is to store them away when they are not in use. Perhaps you can store it under the sink or in a medicine cabinet. And always make sure to maintain good hand washing hygiene so that you do not transfer bacteria to these surfaces this way either.

Kitchen Sink

For most people, their kitchen sink is used on a daily basis. And your sink inevitably comes into contact with some nasty things. Think about how you use the sink to wash your hands, wash dishes, prepare food, and more. This means that your kitchen sink is regularly coming into contact with dirt, bacteria, and meat juices. Given that reality, it is a good idea to add regularly cleaning your kitchen sink to your cleaning schedule. Giving it a good clean is fairly easy, though. Just sprinkle baking soda over the basin and wipe it clean with a vinegar soaked paper towel.

Coffee Maker

The last item on our list is your coffee maker. The unfortunate truth is that your coffee reservoir can be holding onto bacteria, mold, and yeast. And when it is not cleaned regularly, those same things can make their way into your morning cup of joe. Keep your coffee pure and clean your reservoir by running equal parts vinegar and water through your coffee maker occasionally.

And there you have it! Three household items that may be grosser than you think. If you want to browse more helpful homeowner guides, be sure to check out the rest of our Acme Homes blog page!
