Fall Maintenance For Your Home

9-30-2019

There are few things more beautiful than Fall in Washington. Although we adore the vibrant colors of the changing leaves, the crisp fall mornings, and everything pumpkin spice, there are a few things that you must prepare for as a homeowner. Here at Acme Homes, we have compiled a list to make the Fall maintenance of your home more approachable.

Your Fall Home Maintenance Check-List

With winter quickly approaching, you need to begin to think about your home maintenance. Don’t be caught in a storm without your home fully prepared for it. If you are needing help trying to figure out what you need to do, use this fall home maintenance checklist as a guide.

Do An Inspection Of The Outside
If your home is in poor condition on the outside, it will have difficulty keeping the cold elements out. Because of this, you need to inspect it. Look at your gutters, and make sure there are no leaves or branches clogging them. For the downspouts to function properly, they should be clear of debris. Examine your roof. All your shingles should be securely in place, and you shouldn’t see any buckling.

Make Sure Windows and Doors Can Keep Air Out
If you feel a draft by your windows or doors, then you need to have them sealed. There shouldn’t be any cracks, and your weather-stripping should be firmly in place. If you plan on having storm windows installed, now is the time to do it. Don’t wait until the last minute to get this done, or you may have difficulty finding a contractor that’s willing to do it because of inclement weather conditions.

Thoroughly Clean The Inside Of Your Home
It’s a great time to thoroughly clean your home. The winter months seem to be filled with parties and celebrations with friends and family members. Because of this, you might not have a lot of time to give your home a good cleaning. Take care of all of this now before you get too busy to do so. Pull out your stove and refrigerator to clean behind them. Scrub difficult to reach areas like under your cabinets and around your toilets. Have your carpet or tile professionally cleaned. If you plan on having people over for a holiday party, you should also have your couches and chairs professionally cleaned as well.

Have Your Furnace Inspected
You don’t want your furnace to malfunction when it's frigid outside. Have your furnace inspected in order to avoid any issues in the upcoming months. During this inspection, the filter will be checked. They will also test the internal components of the furnace to make sure everything is working properly. If they find that there are any leaks or blocks, they will fix them.

Trim Your Foliage
You probably won’t be able to prune your bushes when cold weather strikes. Because of this, you need to take the time to trim your foliage now. Remove any weeds, and put away plants that are sensitive to cold weather. You can also put mulch around your plants. This will help the soil maintain a more consistent temperature.

Make an Emergency Kit
If you find yourself in the middle of a power outage, it will be beneficial to have an emergency kit. It should contain indoor candles, flashlights, and batteries. You should also have on-hand extra water and non-perishable items. Make sure you have warm blankets and a fully stocked first-aid kit as well.
